The basics
Power's path through your house
Electricity takes the same simplified path in almost every home — from the street, into a meter, through your panel, and out to every circuit. Understanding each stop helps you describe problems accurately when you call anyone for help.
Utility Service
Power arrives from the utility line to your home's service entrance, either overhead or underground.
Meter
The utility meter measures how much electricity you use — this is not something homeowners should ever open.
Main Panel
The panel splits incoming power into individual circuits, each protected by its own breaker.
Branch Circuits
Wiring runs from the panel through your walls to every room, sized to match its breaker's rating.
Outlets & Fixtures
Each circuit ends at outlets, switches, and light fixtures — where your appliances actually plug in.

Inside your electrical panel
Your panel is the traffic controller for every circuit in your home. The main breaker feeds a set of bus bars, which distribute power to each branch breaker — some 120V for standard outlets and lights, some 240V for major appliances.

Not all breakers are the same
Breakers are sized and typed for the load they protect. Mixing these up — or leaving them out where code requires them — is one of the most common issues we find during inspections.

Standard outlets vs. GFCI outlets
A GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter) outlet constantly monitors current and cuts power in a fraction of a second if it senses a ground fault — long before a standard breaker would trip. The National Electrical Code (NEC 210.8) requires GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, laundry areas, unfinished basements, and all outdoor outlets.
If your home still has two-prong outlets with no ground pin, or outlets near water with no TEST/RESET buttons, that's a sign it's time for an upgrade.

A whole-home wiring rough-in, simplified
"Rough-in" is the stage where an electrician runs cable through open walls before drywall goes up, connecting every outlet, switch, and fixture back to the panel with dedicated circuits. This simplified floor plan shows the idea — real homes typically run 2–4x more circuits than shown here, especially in kitchens.
